Toddler
The toddler program is designed to meet the needs of the child between
the ages of 18 mo. to 3 yrs. Concentration comes from active participation
in repeated self chosen activities in a sensory and language rich environment.
Through purposeful activity the children gain confidence and successful
independence in a calm and caring environment. Classes meet daily from 8:45-11:30
AM for half-day children and until 3:00 PM for full-day children.
Children's House
The Children's House serves children from ages three to six. Individual
and small group lessons are offered by the guide in the areas of practical
life, sensorial, language, math, and cultural aspects: geography, science,
art, music, movement, and a foreign language (music and movement times are
also offered as additional enrichment in the afternoon with a specialist).
Coordination of movement and the development of a social community further
strengthen the child’s foundation. Through purposeful work within the Children’s
House, the child is able to develop as his own person, and to learn how to
live within the community, part of this development includes overall instruction
and guidance in the areas of grace and courtesy. Classes meet daily from 8:40
until 11:45 AM for half-day children and until 3:00 PM for full-day children.
Elementary I
Elementary I children are between six and nine years of age. The program
includes the curriculum areas of arithmetic, geometry, science, reading,
language, biology, history, and geography. While the Montessori-trained Guide
primarily oversees the children’s progress, specialists in music, foreign
language, art, and physical education work with the students during the afternoons.
Classes meet daily from 8:30- 3:15 PM.
Elementary II
The Elementary II program is a cooperative learning environment for students
age 9-12 and is designed to follow the specific needs of students of this
age. Students that complete the Montessori Program through age 12 develop
a framework of knowledge that prepares them to be life long learners. The
Montessori approach provides hands-on opportunities for students to develop
skills in advanced mathematics, the Universe, the Living World and Language.
The academic curriculum builds upon concepts introduced in the Children's
House and Elementary I programs, and is designed to prepare the student
for a successful transition to middle school. Small class size and individual
attention allow the EII students to develop skill not only in acamdemic
subject areas, but in independence and social responsibility as well.
Classes meet daily from 8:30- 3:30 PM.
Three
Languages at Rochester Montessori
At Rochester Montessori
School we are committed to guiding
the child to become a “Whole Child” by helping each to develop the skills
necessary to communicate in our global community. This
includes, among other things, exposure to and instruction in foreign languages. As part of our curriculum children ages 3yrs. and
older receive instruction in spanish.
The importance we place on language expands beyond the curriculum proper
and into the extracurricular activities of the late afternoon and early
evening. Children have the opportunity to study
French in two different programs, one designed for younger learners and one
designed for older learners. For families that
come from French speaking backgrounds or for families that just want linguistic
variety, these programs allow the child to spend time in a casual environment
while they learn French. These programs also
incorporate aspects of the French culture and are increasing in popularity
among the families here. In addition to French, we
offer Chinese, one designed for younger learners
and one designed for older learners. As with French, the Chinese classes not only introduce
the child to language, but also to the culture and peoples who speak the
language as their native tongue. This is a wonderful
opportunity for children to come into contact with the most commonly spoken
native language today.
Art:
Art is offered to Elementary Students.
Students are exposed to the elements of art with a chance to try different
media. They are also introduced to famous artists and their work from the
past and the present. The children are given a chance to imitate the artists
work while adding their own individuality and style to their work.
Music
Music is offered to Children’s House Extended Day and Elementary
Students
RMS Music opens children’s ears, eyes, bodies, and minds to the beautiful
world of music. Based on the teaching of Carl Orff and Zoltan Kodaly, the
curriculum seeks, foremost, to foster a comfort with and love of music.
By involving the whole child through listening, moving, singing, playing
and creating, music becomes a vital part of the lives of the children and
their families. As in the philosophy of Dr. S. Suzuki, it is not master
musicians we hope to help develop, but master human beings.
Since music is found everywhere and in all parts of life, RMS Music works
integrally with both classroom activities and other specialties such as
physical education, foreign language studies, and fine arts.
Movement Program (Approx. 5-6 yrs. of age)
Movement is part of the very foundation of learning. The development of
physical skills contributes to the cognitive, social and emotional development
of children. Movement skills help children develop self-confidence and provide
the opportunity to be physically fit. The ultimate goal of our pre-school
movement program is to provide children the opportunity to develop their
physical skills through age appropriate activities and play. Basic movement
skills, rhythms and use of various apparatus and manipulatives are included
in the curriculum. Movement classes meet twice weekly for 30 minute classes.
Elementary Physical Education
Physical education at the elementary level provides an opportunity for
children to develop physical skills, as well as contributing to their cognitive,
social and emotional development. The elementary program focuses on instruction
and guidance of students in proper skill performance and the development
of lifetime activities. Students will learn a wide variety of motor skills,
movement concepts and rhythmic skills. They will also develop an understanding
of health related physical fitness and wellness. Physical education classes
meet daily for 30 minute classes.
