Welcome
We're glad you've joined the RMS community! Truly, we believe each
family that has chosen a Montessori education, an "education for life",
has arrived here with greater reason than you or I may ever know. As a
parent of a Montessori child you already belong to the PTSA. The
communities to which we give ourselves are often chosen carefully.,
respectfully, and with passion. Your choice to give as a parent, an
educator, and a student of the philosophy gives RMS an abundance of
gratitude. Thank you for your commitment, curiosity,
and strife to empower our children so that those to come will know
life's greatness in return.
Our Mission
The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is comprised of all
current Rochester Montessori School (RMS) Parents, Teachers, and
Students. The mission of the PTSA is to promote participation
in the function of the school in order to enrich each child's education
and each family's experience at RMS.
The PTSA educates parents in how the school functions and
enhances communication between the parents and the Board and Staff. In
order to fulfill its mission, the PTSA organizes, sponsors, and hosts
activities which provide opportunities for parents to participate in
the life of the school, and which benefit the school socially,
culturally, and financially.
The Organization
The overall guidance of the PTSA comes from the Co-Chairs. The
2006-2007 Co-Chairs are Sherry and Julie. Both parent volunteers are in their third and fourth
year at RMS respectively and we are most gracious of their
willingness, desire, and commitment to lead the PTSA. To contact the
PTSA click here
General PTSA roles are as follows:
The Co-Chairs of the PTSA run PTSA meetings, act
as a resource for Event Coordinators, and serve as Liaisons to the
Administrator and Board.
The Secretary takes minutes at the monthly PTSA
meetings and distributes them accordingly. This person should also
receive and/or obtain meeting minutes from the sub-committees - those
of events, volunteer groups, and fundraising.
The Treasurer manages the PTSA budget and
coordinates expenses (as well as raised funds) between Event Chairs,
PTSA volunteers, and the School Accountant.
The Lead Room Coordinators serve to represent each
classroom. A Room Coordinator communicates between the classroom and
PTSA. This person is expected to communicate PTSA information to the
parents and teachers of their classroom. Often times, two or more
parents will volunteer to accomplish the tasks of coordinating help
from classroom families.
The Event Coordinators commit to guiding
school-wide activities of social, service, or fundraising nature.
Examples include the Springtime Revelry (Silent Auction), delivery of
fresh flowers to classrooms once/week, the Book Fair, grant writing,
and much more! (see calendar listings)
The Volunteers are those that take direction from
an Event Chair or Room Coordinator in efforts to establish community in
such a way that Rochester Montessori School benefits socially,
culturally, and financially.
Meetings
PTSA Meetings will be held on the dates listed below. Event
Chairpersons and at least one Room Coordinator from each classroom are
required to attend. PTSA Meetings are an excellent way to get to know
other parents and learn about the school. All members of the
RMS community are welcome and encouraged to attend. You're
sure to make a connection. You will not only be "in the know" of RMS
happenings, but you'll also have a chance to share in great
conversation filled with anecdotes of the children (guaranteed to
entertain! But even greater than that - likely to provide assurance
that many of our experiences - both challenging and rewarding - are
easily relatable.)
At meetings, participants identify, schedule, and coordinate
planning for classroom and all-school events taking place throughout
the year. Meetings this year will be held on the following Thursday
mornings at 9:00AM in the School Library.

Programs and Services
Artist-in-Residency Grant
Through the Minnesota State Arts Board, Rochester Montessori School can
apply for a grant that allows for a professional artist to visit our
community and work with our children for an extended period of time. In
the past, RMS has received grants for authors, storytellers, and visual
arts. A team of grant coordinators and writers (teachers, parents, and
community members) work together to plan for a specific art form and
the impact it will have on our children and community.
Phone Tree
Coordinators of this service aim to organize a "chain of phone
numbers" of families to call in the event of an emergency at the
school. Lead Room Coordinators play a role in organizing the classrooms
individually.
Fresh Flower Pick-up/Delivery
(classroom work of "flower arranging")
Fresh flowers play an obvious and integral role in the "practical life
skill" of flower arranging practiced by children. Children learn to use
a steady hand, exercise their eye or aesthetic beauty, and enjoy the
scent of nature. A coordinator establishes a sign-up of pick-up
volunteers (one day/week). Volunteers can offer as little or as many
days!
