Welcome to
Rochester Montessori School’s
Summer Programs
Rochester Montessori School’s
summer programs are
characterized by creative learning experiences throughout the summer
months.
From the toddler to the elementary levels, each week promises something
new and
exciting to lean and explore. We invite your child to join us for these
wonderful and unique opportunities.
Our summer
programs are on-going for a period of eight weeks, starting on June 16
and
running through August 8. Your child, however, is invited to enroll by
the
week and new this year, your
Children's House or Elementary level child has the option to attend
morning or afternoon half day programs! See the class description pages
for available weeks!
Children enrolling in the summer
programs will register for the level in which they attended during the
2007-2008 school year. In the event that the minimum or maximum
number for the class is not reached or exceeded, you may be contacted
regarding cancellation of the class or placement on a waiting
list.
If you have
questions regarding enrollment or registration, please call the RMS
office at
288-8725 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Summer with the Toddlers
Welcome
to
the summer program for our youngest community members!
The Toddler
Program is run as a Montessori environment all summer and is open to
children
18 months to 3 years of age currently enrolled at RMS. The staff
members
working with the toddlers this summer will be Niniek Pranoto, Laura
Elliott, Vicki Blazing, Clarisse Colin-Hoag, Tiffany Heath and Jana
Bennettova..
Activities…
In addition
to the work in the classroom environment, the program will offer a
variety of
fun activities throughout the week including; art projects, outdoor
activities,
walks, picnics, water play and more!
Daily
Schedule…
You may
drop your child off at the Toddler classroom from 8:45-8:55 a.m. and your child may be picked up at
the classroom from 11:30-11:40 a.m.
For those
of you choosing full day for your toddler, he of she will be joining
the
Children’s House nappers in the Dayhouse environment at 11:30 a.m. for lunch and afternoon
naps. Scheduled pick up
in the afternoon is from 3:00-3:15 p.m.
at the outdoor benches.
Children’s
House Focus Program…
The
children will use activities, projects and experiments relating to the
theme of
the week.
Week 1 and 2 (Kate)… Beautiful Bugs
*An army of ants, buzzubg beesm creeking crickets,
lovely ladybugs, beautiful butterflies and green grasshoppers are just
some of the interesting insects we will learn about. We will study a
new insect each day for two weeks... sign up for one or both weeks!
Week 3 AM (Nikki)… Sports Fun
*We'll have a ball during this very active week...
we will explore and learn the basics of some fun and popular sports!
Week 3 PM (Clarisse)… Our 5 Senses
*We will spend our afternoons exploring,
identifying and comparing our sense of touch, smell, taste, hearing and
sight. Many activities are planned ofr a fun and exciting week!
Week 4 (Kate)… A Rainbow of Color
*Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and
orange and blue... we will sing, draw, bake and eat all the colors of
the rainbow! Join us in wearing the color of the day!
Week 5 (Joan)... Let's Make Music
*This will be a fun filled week of making our own
musical instruments. Each day we will have a local musician visit and
share some music with us. Let's make music together!
Week 6 AM (Nikki)... Masterpiece a
Day
*Each morning of this week we will learn about a
different famous artist and create some of our own masterpieces!
Week 6 PM (Andy)... Under the Sea
*We will dive under the ocean to learn about its
interesting inhabitants and ecological environments.
Week 7 (Nikki)... A Day at the Zoo
*One day at the zoo is never enough, so join me
for 5 days of navigating our way through all you'd see and do at the
zoo!
Week 8 AM (Clarisse)... Fun with
French
*While learning basic French words and phrases we
will explore the French culture including the food, traditional dance,
music and popular games like "La petanque".
Week 8 PM (Nikki)... Fun, Fun, Fun!
*We are going to play our afternoons away... from
hopscotch and jump rope to water play and sand castles and bubbles...
let's see how much fun we can pack into our afternoons!
*After March 15,
open spaces in enrollment will be open to the general public.
Children’s House Daily Schedule…
The pick up
and drop off procedure that we follow during the school year will also
be
applied to the summer session…
Morning drop off… 8:40 to 8:55 a.m.
Morning pick up… 11:45 to 12:00 p.m.
Afternoon drop off... 11:45 to 12:00 p.m.
Afternoon pick up… 3:00 to 3:15 p.m.
Dayhouse Environment…
Those
children that end the year napping in the afternoon and
are
enrolled for the full day summer program, will transition at lunch time
to the
Dayhouse environment.
Additional Services…
The
additional services of Early Drop Off and Late Pick Up are available
for the
Children’s House and Elementary children at the following times…
Early Drop Off… 7:30-8:30 a.m.
Late Pick Up I… 3:00-4:30 p.m.
Late Pick Up II… 3:00-5:30 p.m.
Elementary I Focus Program
Get ready for a summer of fun… there is something
to fit
everyone’s interests through these classes offered!
Week 1 Full Day (Tina)… Summer
Olympics Chinese Camp
*Beijing, China welcomes you to the 2008 Olympics!
We will learn some basic Chinese (Mandarin) words and phrases along
with traditional Chinese culture. We will enjoy folk craft art, games,
songs and Chinese stories!
Week 2 AM (Andy)… Rocks and Fossils
*We will learn about rock types, properties of
rocks, and science experiments with rocks along with fossils... we will
make fossils and at th eend of the week, go fossil hunting at Quarry
Hill Nature Center.
Week 2 PM (Clarisse)… Creative
Sewing Studio
*Our focus this week is to learn the basics of
needlework and sewing including embroidery and appliques. We will be
making cool things like a headband, fleece Chinese slippers and a dog
hand puppet to keep or give as a gift!
Week 3 AM (Clarisse)… French Chefs
*We will study the "Art of French Cooking", the
language and the culture. We will practice traditional etiquette, good
nutrition and use healthy ingredients (Fresh and natrual when
possible). We will prepare and enjoy each days lunch together (No sack
lunches!). There will be a small fee for groceries.
Week 3 PM (Vicki Blazing)…
Beads...Beads...Beads
*Learn about the origin of beads, use your
imagination to create with quality beads and wire! You will get a
chance to make several pieces such as jewelry, picture frame and beaded
people. Parents are invited to our "Art Show" on Friday at 2:45 pm. A
small materials fee may be necessary.
Week 4 AM (Tina)... Science and
Math
*We will bring the magic of science to life with
interesting experiments. We will also make math interesting with
"Olympic Mathematics".
Week 4 PM (Joan)... Games, Games,
Games
*From the table to the field... let's brush up on
old skills and learn some new!
Week 5 Full Day (Vicki Blazing)...
The Altered Book
*Using a recycled hardcover book we will make a
creative work of art by altering the pages. Using a theme of your
choice (circus, food, sports, etc.) you will be shown different
techniques to change the pages to reflect your theme. The process
includes: painting, gluing, folding, coloring, cutting, punching and
collage. Materials will be supplied, but you are welcome to bring
your own hard cover bood and/or collage items. Parents are invited to
our "Altered Book Show" on Friday at 2:45 pm.
Week 6 Full Day (Sharri)... Arts
and Crafts
*We will spend our mornings learning about some of
history's famous artists and create our own work by trying their
styles. In the afternoons we will lighten things up a bit and do some
crafting! Parents are invited to our "Arts and Crafts Show" on Friday
afternoon.
Week 7 AM (Jennie)... Rochester
* A week of fun exploring Rochester! We will ride
the city bus and take in the city. We will learn about our city's
history and importance in the world. Of course we will visit some of
the famous sites (guess which ones)!
Week 7 PM (Jennie)... Geography
*Come and travel the world with us!
Week 8 Full Day (Jennie)...
Physical Science
*An integrated exploration of Chemistry and
Physics using materials the students use on a regular basis.
Elementary II Focus Program
Through
the unique classes offered each week, the children
will explore, design, cook and create their way through a fun summer!
Week 1 Full Day
(Jennie)… Spanish Camp
*This will be a fun week of Spanish immersion for
all levels of Spanish speakers. The emphasis of this week will be on
grammar and vocabulary.
Week 2 Full Day
(Jennie)… Physical Science
*An integrated exploration of Chemistry and
Physics using materials the students use on a regular basis.
Week 3 AM (Vicki)…
Beads...Beads...Beads
*Learn about the origin of beads, use your
imagination to create with quality beads and wire! You will get a
chance to make several pieces such as jewelry, picture frame and beaded
people. Parents are invited to our "Art Show" on Friday at 11:30 am.
Week 3 PM (Sara)…
Wild Things
*The wild outdoors will be our home for the
afternoons. This exciting week includes hanging out in the hammock,
building a fire pit and of course sleeping out in the "RMS Woods" on
Thursday night! Grab your bug spray and hiking boots... we're heading
outdoors! This class will not meet on Friday afternoon so the children
will need to be picked up at 9 am or at 11:45 am if attending the AM
session.
Week 4 AM (Sara)… Games,
Games, Games
*From the table to the field... let's brush up on
old skills and learn some new!
Week 4 PM (Sara)…
The "Boys and Girls of Summer" is back!
*A week of baseball. We will start off the week
attending a Rochester Honker's game and spend the rest of the week
practicing new skills and honing in on old ones. We will have the
traditional showdown with the pros (and maybe some parents?) on Friday.

Week
5 AM (Sara)... The Basics of Cooking
*Learn to cook simple, healthy meals and snacks.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner... let's practice table setting skills and
mealtime manners. Who's hungry?
Week 5 PM (Jennie)...
Rochester
* A week of fun exploring Rochester! We will ride
the city bus and take in the city. We will learn about our city's
history and importance in the world. Of course we will visit some of
the famous sites (guess which ones)!
Week 6 AM (Jennie)... Ashtanga Yoga
*A fixed series of movements to facilitate deep
breathing, flexibility and the mindfulness that comes from peace.
Week 6 PM (Sara)... Let's Party
*We will plan, build and run a carnival for the
Children's House and E1 children!
Week 7 Full Day (Sharri)... Arts
and Crafts
*We will spend our mornings learning about some of
history's famous artists and create our own work by trying their
