Elementary

Grades 1-6

Where thinkers emerge

The Elementary years mark a powerful shift. Children move into Montessori’s Second Plane of Development—driven by imagination, moral reasoning, and a growing awareness of the wider world. In mixed-age classrooms—E1 (Grades 1–3) and E2 (Grades 4–6)—students deepen their independence while expanding academically from concrete materials to abstract thinking. This is where curiosity becomes research, responsibility becomes leadership, and learning becomes connected across disciplines.

Elementary guides

Mentors who cultivate inquiry and academic growth

Montessori-trained Guides act as academic mentors and facilitators of inquiry. Through observation, dialogue, and carefully sequenced lessons, they guide students from foundational understanding toward analysis, synthesis, and independent thought. Regular student conferences foster reflection, goal-setting, and ethical awareness. Families remain closely connected through conferences, written reports, and access to Transparent Classroom—our secure online platform that allows parents to see lessons introduced, practiced, and mastered.

Prepared environment

A concept-rich classroom for connected learning

Elementary classrooms are intellectually expansive. Students engage in math, geometry, biology, history, geography, language, engineering, robotics, Spanish, art, music, outdoor education, and peace studies. Learning is rooted in Montessori’s Cosmic Education—big stories that connect the universe, humanity, and the natural world—helping children see how subjects interrelate.

Materials isolate key concepts and include built-in error control, allowing students to test ideas independently and refine their understanding toward mastery. As students mature, work increasingly moves beyond materials into research, written analysis, experimentation, and public presentation.

Environmental stewardship and global awareness are woven throughout daily life. Students care for classrooms and grounds, participate in outreach beyond campus, and examine diverse perspectives through literature and community dialogue.

Growing Independence

Leadership, responsibility, and ethical reasoning

Freedom and responsibility grow together in Elementary. Students manage long-term projects, collaborate in teams, contribute to classroom governance, and explore their role in the local community. Peer relationships become central, and Guides intentionally support the development of fairness, justice, and respectful debate.

By upper Elementary, students are confident presenters, thoughtful researchers, and capable problem-solvers. They read widely, write across genres, conduct experiments, and complete a strong sixth-grade math curriculum or beyond. Independence now includes academic rigor, moral reasoning, and leadership within a community.

Individualized learning

Responsive instruction guided by observation

Every child’s growth is closely monitored and thoughtfully supported. Guides observe daily work, track progress across subject areas, and ensure each student is appropriately challenged. Families receive regular communication through conferences and trimester reports, and through Transparent Classroom—our secure online platform that allows parents to see lessons introduced, practiced, and mastered.

Students in Grades 3–6 also participate in MAP assessments in math and language. These nationally normed assessments provide one additional snapshot of progress and help us reflect on both individual growth and overall program strength. We also ensure alignment with state academic standards so students are well prepared for future academic settings.

When students need extra help, Guides partner with families and our learning specialist to determine next steps. When students are ready to move ahead, curriculum adjusts to meet them. The result is steady, confident growth—academically strong and ready for what comes next.

Prepared for what's next

Continuing the Montessori journey into RMS Middle School

Montessori Elementary integrates disciplines through inquiry and real-world application, helping students learn how to research, question, present, and think independently within a connected, concept-rich curriculum. Students complete these years with strong academic foundations, growing confidence, and a developing sense of responsibility to their community and world.

With curiosity intact and responsibility strengthened, they are well prepared to continue their journey at RMS Middle School—where the habits of inquiry, independence, and global awareness cultivated in Montessori naturally align with the challenges of the IB Middle Years Programme.
